May 2004 My name is Erin. I am 34 years old from Troy, N,Y., married, and mother to two daughters ages eight and six. When I started my low carb way of life in June 2003 (Atkins), I weighed 230 pounds and wore a size 22. I am only 5' 4 1/2", so this was a lot of weight on a short body. I was really fed up. I had tried every low fat diet known to man. I had even gone on weight loss medication (on which I gained six more pounds). I finally went to my doctor and said "That's it, I want a referral for gastric bypass surgery." I felt awful - I was always tired, and I couldn't do anything remotely athletic with my kids. My doctor told me he had one more thing he wanted me to try and if that didn't work he would give me the referral I wanted. He told me he wanted me to stop or cut way down on the number of carbs I was eating. I told him he was nuts and I didn't think I could do it. He said "try for one month and then we will talk".
A month later I had lost 6 lbs and was already starting to feel better. I wish I had tried this years ago. I have never been able to diet and stick with it. I was always hungry and would binge when my resistance was low. I never successfully kept the weight off for any significant period of time. But I am now down to 179 pounds! I dropped 5 pants sizes and feel great. I stick to 20-30 carbs per day on ongoing weight loss and would like to lose another 30 pounds or at least one more pant size. This way of life has saved my life. I feel 15 years younger and I owe it all to my doctor. I have more energy than I have had in years and finally feel attractive again. I never feel bloated or over full. It is simple to do, and I can eat at any restaurant without a problem. Quote: Sharing Success Strategies Erin says: "My best advice to other dieters is when it goes slow...stick with it. I only lost 2-3 lbs a week. Most people I know who do low carb had a significant drop in the beginning. I never had that, but I knew 2-3 pounds was better than nothing. I did plateau for about 2 months, but I stuck with it and the weight started coming off again."
"Remember not to beat yourself up if you fall off the wagon. Enjoy what you are eating, but get right back on after that meal."
