In this month's success story I feature three of our very own, (regular posters over at cookingtlc.net), all of whom have great things to report! Bonnie in Seattle went from a size 26 to a size 20, while significantly improving her blood lipids!
After 6 months on Atkins , 4/11/00: Total Cholesterol - 229 Triglycerides - 148 HDL 49 LDL 137 Ratio: (Total Cholesterol % HDL) 4.6 After four years on Atkins, 12/23/03: Cholesterol - 187 Triglycerides - 93 HDL - 68 LDL - 100 Ratio: 2.75 Anita in Virginia writes... We started this Way of Life in August of 2003 and decided to try it for a month to see how it would go. My DH's doctor had increased his triglyceride medication and we knew we had to take matters in our own hands or else all we could see were more medications down the road. I immediately began researching online and low and behold, found this website. For that I need to give Karen a huge Thank YOU!! We started with the Atkins quick start plan of 10 carbs/day and have gradually increased it to 20-25. Within a month I had lost 17 pounds and DH had lost 14. We were "hooked" to say the least! Almost 4 month to the day that we started, my DH had labs drawn for his yearly physical.
DH's doctors office called yesterday with his lab results: Total cholesterol 182 Tryglycerides 90 HDL 42 LDL 122 Ratio to HDL 4.3
All are under their limits, some not as much as others, but it certainly is a great start. The nurse said "Whatever you are doing, KEEP IT UP!" His physician had said from the beginning, that he had no reservations about DH following the Atkins plan. He also said that although the plan did not work for him, he has seen others who have had great success.
DH is down 32 lbs or more (depending on the scale) I have gotten rid of 40 pounds in less than 5 months. We feel better, look better and are more active than ever.
We have been on the Low Carb Way Of Life since August of 2003 and I can't wait to see how much better it gets during the next year. Our next goal is to have our pictures retaken April 23rd on our first wedding anniversary and compare them! Carol in Minnesota writes... I was diagnosed type II diabetic about a year and a half ago, with a HbA1c reading of 6.7 (normal is 4.4-6.4) and a fasting blood sugar of 126-165 (normal is 70-108).
Prior to starting this LC way of life, I always had high triglycerides. At one time, they were measured at 1500! For years they ran around the 300-400 level.
At that time my other cholesterol levels were as follows: Total : 176 HDL: 55 LDL 93
Now, after doing LC for a full year, here are my results. My HbA1c is 5.1 , and my fasting blood sugars run between 90 and 100.
My Lipids are as follows: -----------------NORMS FOR WOMEN------MINE Total cholesterol --under 200--------------190 Triglycerides ------ under 200--------------219 HDL ---------------- above 35----------------68 LDL ---------------- under 130---------------95 My triglycerides, as mentioned, have always been a problem, and 219 is a good number for me - and I know it'll continue to improve. My doctor is thrilled with my progress, and my 56 lbs lost. She changed my diagnosis from Type II Diabetes to "Glucose Intolerant". She made the comment, "the Atkins diet doesn't work for everyone, but it's working for you, so keep it up!"
