Low-Carb Plan: Atkins-Protein Power-Me
CHOKE DOWN YOUR SUPPLEMENTS:

Supplements are crucial to both your long term weight loss success and that feeling of well being you've heard so much about. At minimum you should be taking a really GOOD (complete) chelated multivitamin such as the TwinLab DualTabs that I take, which are recommended in Protein Power by name, as well as some added potassium if you are eating VERY low-carb, such as during "Induction", the first stage of the traditional Atkins diet. Warning - too much potassium is just as dangerous as too little, but I recommend 2 tablets of 99mg elemental each, daily, minimum, for anyone on a very low carb diet! DO NOT SKIP THIS. **If you take high blood pressure or other medications, do check with your doctor! Potassium can interact with many HBP meds. In fact, you should run any new supplement regimen by your own doctor. This is GENERAL advice, if you have a condition that might prohibit taking potassium, then of COURSE... disregard this advice. And you might want to rethink doing a strict low-carb diet, too, in favor of something like the Hamptons Diet or even South Beach.

Make sure your multi includes both calcium and magnesium, which work in combination with the potassium to prevent very common muscle aches/cramps and pulse or blood pressure irregularities in persons beginning a LC diet. The potassium/magnesium can also prevent rapid heartbeat and palpitations, which I suffered from myself until I learned the hard way. Before I started supplementing these particular minerals, on Day 3 of my own induction, my resting pulse went up to 110, and my BP was 160 over 110! YIKES! Were it not for some kind and well informed people on the internet who advised me to take some potassium immediately, this site and my own diet success would NEVER have existed.... I would have quit and turned into one of those nay-sayers who think low carb is unhealthy!

I also take and recommend EAS Structured EFAs along with Microhydrin Plus, a super antioxidant compound, HydraCel, which makes your drinking water more PH balanced, preventing the formation of many free radicals and which is available through the same link, and I personally take Glucosamine as well, due to a family tendency towards arthritis and osteoporosis, and the fact that I did break my spine in what seemed at the time like a minor accident.

For most of my life, I was one of those people who wouldn't even take an aspirin for a headache and who thought you should be able to get everything your body needs from your diet. But the world is increasingly toxic these days, and that attitude no longer applies, in my opinion. Yes, I can walk around and function just fine without taking supplements. But when it comes to exercising, or skiing all day - without supplements, I just don't have the endurance or energy. All I had to do was forget to take them on a work-out day or two, and I was a die-hard believer!!

If you have trouble taking pills, try my method: Fill your mouth with water first; then pop the pill in on top of the water, take another drink and swallow. This prevents the pill from ever touching your tongue, and hopefully prevents it from sticking anywhere and starting a gag reflex. It took me a good month to get used to swallowing several pills a day and I still go out of my way to buy smaller, coated tablets or gelcaps whenever possible. But skipping your supplements while eating low carb is NOT an option. Just do it.
